RAFT adds educational value to donated materials and offers them to members at nominal cost.  Materials are used to create teaching ideas;  teacher workshops show members how to develop innovative lesson plans using donated materials.

Just about any gadget destined for the recycle bin can find its way into a learning kit or shopping bag.  To be sure your items are usable, please view our Material Donation Guidelines.  Or contact us by calling 916.640.1442 or emailing This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

Our staff can visit your company to survey items you have available for donation; our truck can pick up materials at Sacramento area company sites.  And, remember that your donation is tax deductible.

How RAFT Reuses Materials
  • Cardboard tubes become pinhole cameras and math games.
  • Small rubber circles, or gasket holes, are bagged as math counters.
  • A film canister, straw, broken balloon and small piece of tube make a musical instrument.
  • A CD with a balloon attached creates a hovercraft.
  • Mylar, cardboard tubes and colorful bits of material combine to make kaleidoscopes.
  • String, hooks and “weights” create a double pendulum, passing kinetic energy back and forth.
